Grooming a Dog

Grooming a dog Yourself. Step-by-Step Guide.

-What You Need -

First you need a dog grooming kit like we have. With an electric or battery powered heavy duty shaver, a comb, Clippers, and nail trimmers. These can be aqquired at Wal-mart. You'll also need nail filling, its amust in case the blood vain in a dog's nail is cut.

Summer Shaves - Walk your dog before the shaving process. Then relax your dog into a possestion. Shaving takes patience and lots and lots of time. Then slowly turn on your shaver and get your og used to the sound. Some dogs like it, some don't. For those that don't this will take more patience, but don't give up, its still possible to groom your dog. Always starting shaving on the back of your dog, once you start shaving, thats it, you must now finish. All long haired breeds need to be cool for the summer, a summer cut is exactly what is needed.

 Nail Trimming

Its easier to trim a dog that has white nails so you can see the pink underline of the quick vain. Dogs with black nails are more tricker. Always have nail filling around in case of an accident, and always never pannic if your dog bleeds. Do not cut close, but in between.

 Trimming the Pads

As an experienced dog groomer, my mom always trims dog's pads. This includes trimming in between the nails to ensure hair will not knott up in between toes. Get a clipper made for hair. Then carefully take your dog's paws and stop trimming, puppies paws should held and played with alot, all four of them so they behave for this when they're older. Adult dogs should also be practiced with if they're not already used to it.

 Around the Eyes

All dogs need to see, but certain breeds have standards. Old English Sheepdogs for example, should not have the hair around their eyes trimmed even if their shaved, because then it won't look like an old english sheepdog anymore. Dogs like Yorkiepoos should have the hair trimmed around their eyes. areful not to poke the dog's eye because most dogs put up a fight for this and thats why grooming a dog is so hard and you must be a patient person, careful and yet firm at some point.

 Bathing after Shaving

Its known to bathe a dog before, but after is actually better because then you are cleaning what is already trimmed. If the dog's hair is wet you'll need to wait longer to shave them. It only makes sense to bathe after the grooming and trimming are completed.

 Final Touches

Its good too add a final touch, like a pony tail or just a new collar to give your dog a new look. Groomers will often put a bandana around the dog's neck to give a completed style, it impresses the owners too.

We'll post new segments little by little on more tips for grooming your dog, but this is the basics, stay informed for the more advanced things to come. Soon your pooch will look as good as that stunning white poodle with the fancy bow.
